Program: Semi-Intensive English
  • Description: This program contains nine sequential levels followed by six non-sequential modules and is designed to provide English language instruction to students who are unlikely to attend an English-speaking institution of higher education, but who wish to nevertheless improve English proficiency and communication skills for personal or professional reasons.
  • Skills Addressed: Listening, Speaking, Grammar
  • Hours: 18 hours per week; Monday-Thursday

English for academics

Programs: Beginner English, Intensive English, Advanced English

Beginner English: This program contains two non-sequential modules and is designed for true-beginner learners of English. The broad educational goal is to provide students with the opportunity to develop the linguistic skills and American classroom norms necessary for success in TLC’s other programs. Students learn about the English sound system, parts of speech, and are able to produce simple sentences with simple present verbs to discuss everyday topics.

Advanced English: This program contains six non-sequential modules and is designed for students who have completed Level 9 of the Intensive English Program and wish to further refine and practice advanced English language and classroom skills in order to prepare for advanced levels of studies in American institutions of higher education. Students carry out research and present and/or write about it while developing specific writing and research-related skills.

Intensive English: This program contains nine sequential levels and is designed to provide English language instruction that will prepare academically bound students for successful university study in English-speaking institutions. By the end of this program, students are able to produce grammatically correct sentences with a variety of verb forms and sentence structures in speaking and writing. Students will be able to produce researched writing that adheres to academic integrity norms.

Hours: 25 hours per week; Monday-Thursday

English for test prep

Program: English Test Preparation*

Description: This program contains six non-sequential modules and is designed to prepare students for standardized tests that measure English proficiency. Students participate in various practice activities, learn about and practice test-taking strategies, and further develop their English across skill areas.

Skills Addressed: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar

Hours: 25 hours per week; Monday-Thursday

*Prerequisites: Students must pass Intensive English level 5 or place into level 6 or higher to enroll in English Test Preparation.

English for speaking and listening

Course: Listening and Speaking

Beginner Listening and Speaking Course Description: This course focuses on English listening and speaking skills for beginner English learners. Topics covered include responding to and asking questions, identifying logical order, and identifying main ideas in oral statements. This class is comprised of twelve (12) hours of interactive distance learning and twelve (12) hours of assignments to be completed outside of class time.

Intermediate Listening and Speaking Course Description: This course focuses on English listening and speaking skills for intermediate English learners. Topics covered include restating information heard from oral sources, taking notes and talking about information from multiple sources, identifying and paraphrasing specific details in oral arguments, and producing verbal summaries. This class is comprised of twelve (12) hours of interactive distance learning and twelve (12) hours of assignments to be completed outside of class time.

Advanced Listening and Speaking Course Description: This course focuses on English listening and speaking skills for advanced English learners. Topics covered include asking and responding to open-ended questions on academic topics using complete sentences, associating causes and effects from a variety of sources, and using quotations and reported speech to support oral arguments. This class is comprised of twelve (12) hours of interactive distance learning and twelve (12) hours of assignments to be completed outside of class time.

English that's customized for special purposes

Program: Special Programs

Description: These are highly customized, seasonal, or third-party business-to-business offerings. Special Programs allows for students to have fully customized instruction either in a private or group setting, or to take, for example, just Reading/Writing classes with TLC without having to enroll in the full IE program. Part-time enrollment is not available to F-1 students in Special Programs.
