Intensive English Program


The academic program is carefully designed to help you achieve your language learning goals.

  • Placement test to accurately determine your starting level
  • Thirteen four-week sessions per year
  • The equivalent of one hundred 50-minute lessons per session
  • Unique, optional sixth hour daily at no extra cost
  • Nine levels of instruction plus post-graduate courses
Classes meet Monday through Friday. The equivalent of twenty-five 50-minute lessons are offered each week. Classes include structure and speaking, reading, writing, and core plus courses. Core plus courses give advanced students (Levels 7-9) the opportunity to study English language skills through application courses such as American Culture, Debate, Morphology, American and Local History, TOEFL and IELTS Preparation, and Film and Novel Reviews.

NINE LEVELS OF INSTRUCTION


Beginning - Levels 1, 2, and 3

When you complete Level 3, you will be able to:
  • Communicate effectively in everyday situations
  • Understand simple social and academic conversations with native speakers of English
  • Convey written and verbal information for social and academic purposes
  • Read a variety of materials appropriate for beginning levels

Intermediate - Levels 4, 5, and 6

When you complete Level 6, you will be able to:
  • Express yourself, orally and in writing, with ease and few errors on a full range of subjects
  • Correctly use the most common and important grammatical structures
  • Read and understand technical and academic material in a familiar field
  • Write clearly while applying basic and intermediate English structures and vocabulary

Advanced - Levels 7, 8, and 9

When you complete Level 9, you will possess the skills you need in the academic or professional world. You will be able to:
  • Discuss and understand information found in academic resources
  • Participate in conversations and panel discussions on social and academic topics
  • Write academic papers at a university level
  • Read, understand, and debate published materials, such as technical papers, novels, and professional journals
Please note: Levels may be combined at times depending on student enrollment and placement.


Core Plus Courses


At advanced levels, you can focus your English study by choosing core plus courses. You can work on areas that interest you or practice skills that your advisor recommends before you attend the university. Please note: Not all core plus courses are offered every session or at every center, but you will have a choice of several.
