HAYS LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (HLI) 

The Institute 

HLI is located in Picken Hall on the Fort Hays State University (FHSU) campus.

The City of Hays

Rated, 3rd best of "small city" university cities in the U.S., Hays is located in northwestern Kansas and is the "business center" of a large area. Approximately 20,000 people live in the city. Hays residents warmly welcome students into the community, which provides an excellent opportunity to experience American culture.

Activities 

Because Hays has the unique flavor of a small city in the U.S. central states, special activities are possible which give students a unique view of  traditional American culture. Hays has four distinct seasons, so HLI is able to provide a variety of outdoor and recreational activities which vary with each season.

  • Parties and after-school activities at the institute
  • Western culture events, including rodeos and county fairs
  • Campus sports events, including championship-level basketball
  • Skiing trips in winter to Colorado for a reasonable additional fee
  • Visits to other cities including Kansas City, Wichita and Denver for museums, shopping and special events

Conditional Admission and English Requirements

Fort Hays State University will grant admission to qualified HLI students. Fort Hays State University qualifications are:

  • Undergraduate students admitted with TOEFL of 500/173 or completion of HLI Level 9
  • Graduate students admitted with TOEFL of 550/213 or completion of HLI Level 9
  • Level 8 & 9 HLI students may concurrently enroll in or audit Fort Hays State University classes (permission required)
